What is Les Misérables about?

The cast of Les Misérables are standing on the stage looking up at their fellow cast members who are raising their arms.

Les Misérables, the musical adaptation of the epic historical novel of the same name, is now the longest-running musical in the West End and remains one of the most sensational productions to be staged in London.

Set in 1800s France, Les Misérables tells the story of former prisoner Jean Valjean, who is hunted for decades by the ruthless policeman Javert after breaking his parole. An epic journey set against the backdrop of the French Revolution and social upheaval, Jean Valjean finds himself an outcast after spending 19 years in prison for stealing bread and attempting several escapes, now constantly on the run. Freedom has a bitter taste for him, as doors close due to his status as a former convict. Old habits die hard, making it a struggle for a repeat offender to get by.

A man stands on a platform above a crowd and makes a speech.

Les Misérables, originally spread across five volumes, was at the time the longest novel ever written, and follows multiple plots in one same story. Jean Valjean's tragedy and fight against corruption is intertwined with other stories bringing to the central stage social problems that go beyond borders. The story also revolves around Fantine, a young woman abandoned by her former lover Félix Tholomyès and forced into prostitution to pay off her debts, and her daughter Cosette, who is left in the care of a corrupt innkeeper.

Les Misérables is a one of a kind immersive experience in of the tumultuous streets of post-revolutionary France with the innovative use of a revolving stage, breathtaking set designs and elaborate costumes. The music score includes some of the most famous songs such as "I Dreamed a Dream," "One Day More," "On My Own," and "Do You Hear the People Sing?"
