About
Step back into 1980s Dublin and see what the cool kids on the block are getting up to in Sing Street, a brand-new musical hitting the Lyric Hammersmith Theatre this summer.
Inspired by John Carney’s hit indie film, the show follows a group of teenagers facing the ups and downs of growing up, all while dreaming of forming a rock band that could change everything.
With killer tunes, unforgettable characters and a story that’ll have you cheering for more, this is one show you won’t want to miss.
What is the story behind Sing Street?
Meet Conor, a sixteen-year-old who just can’t seem to catch a break. His parents are constantly at odds, his older brother refuses to leave the house, and his new school doesn’t seem quite right – the strict Catholic institution is making him feel anything but welcomed.
That’s until Raphina comes along, on the lookout for her next modelling gig. Determined to impress her, Conor boldly invites her to star in a music video for his band. There’s just one problem… he doesn’t have a band. Yet.
What follows is a whirlwind of emotions, makeshift auditions and a race to turn a group of misfit musicians into something real. With a soundtrack embracing the new wave sounds of the 1980s – featuring music and lyrics by John Carney and Gary Clark, plus brand-new songs created for the stage version – Sing Street is a celebration of first love, self-discovery and the power of music to bring people together.
It’s about finding your voice and chasing a future that feels truly your own.
Why you should see Sing Street at the Lyric Hammersmith Theatre
Based on John Carney’s hit film of the same name, Sing Street sees him teaming up once again with Enda Walsh to bring the story to the stage. The duo previously collaborated on Once, the Oscar-winning movie-turned-musical that went on to claim eight Tony Awards and the 2014 Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in Music.
After making its debut Off-Broadway in New York, Sing Street enjoyed a successful run at Boston’s Huntington Theatre under the direction of Rebecca Taichman. Produced by Barbara Broccoli – best known for her work on the James Bond film series – the show is now crossing the pond for its highly anticipated London debut at the Lyric Hammersmith.
Expect a heartfelt coming-of-age story, a soundtrack packed with 80s-inspired hits, and a story that will have you rooting for the little guy.
