With powerful storytelling and unforgettable music, this is a production you won’t want to miss. WIth a record number of 13 nominations at the 2025 Olivier Awards, the smash-hit musical is coming back to London with a bang!
What is Fiddler on the Roof about?
The latest revival of Fiddler on the Roof, adapted from Joseph Stein’s book with music by Jerry Bock and lyrics by Sheldon Harnick, brings the beloved 1964 musical back to the London stage. Set in 1905, the story follows a Jewish community trying to hold onto its traditions as change and uncertainty loom.
Tevye, a humble milkman in the village of Anatevka, does his best to provide for his family while staying true to his beliefs. But when his three eldest daughters – Tzeitel, Hodel and Chava – come of age, they each challenge tradition by choosing love over arranged marriages. Yente the village matchmaker tries to find them suitable husbands, but times are changing.
It soon becomes clear that the daughters are ready to follow their hearts, no matter the consequences. But beyond marriage and family struggles, danger is looming. The Russian authorities threaten the peaceful village, disrupting celebrations and forcing the people of Anatevka to face an uncertain future, ultimately leaving their homes.
Jerry Bock’s score brings Fiddler on the Roof to life with timeless songs like “If I Were a Rich Man”, “Tradition” and “Sunrise, Sunset”, creating a powerful story about love, faith and change.

Facts about Fiddler on the Roof
The title Fiddler on the Roof comes from a painting by Marc Chagall, which shows a violinist standing on a rooftop in a snowy landscape. At first, the show was supposed to be called Not So Far Away or Where Poppa Came From, taking inspiration from Tevye and His Daughters, the collection of short stories by Sholem Aleichem on which the musical is based.
First opening on Broadway in 1964, Fiddler on the Roof quickly became a huge success, making history as the first musical to run for more than 3,000 performances, a record it held for 10 years. It was nominated for ten Tony Awards and won nine, including Best Musical, setting the stage for countless revivals and international productions that would follow.
London audiences first saw Fiddler on the Roof in 1967 at the then Her Majesty’s Theatre, where it ran for over 2,000 performances. The musical has since had four major West End revivals, with the 2020 production winning the Olivier Award for Best Revival, proving its lasting impact on British theatre.
