About

Don’t miss the latest adaptation of Richard II at the Bridge Theatre – a Shakespearean drama set to captivate London audiences this winter. Set in medieval England, Richard II dives into treason, tyranny and the fierce clash between two heirs to the throne.

Directed by Nicholas Hytner and featuring Bridgerton star and Olivier Award winning actor Jonathan Bailey as Richard II, this much awaited revival is set to delight West End audiences from February 2025.

What is the play Richard II about?

Meet Richard II, a charismatic and eloquent king, loved by his friends but not so popular with the people of England. Often described as a disastrous monarch, he is seen as dishonest, and his reign is marked by poor decisions that ultimately lead to his downfall.

Richard’s capricious nature and belief in his inherent right to rule leave him blind to the needs of his kingdom. Fearing threats to his authority, he exiles many, including his cousin Henry Bolingbroke, a rival with a legitimate claim to the throne. Banished for six years, Bolingbroke promises to return, raise an army, and claim what is rightfully his.

As Richard wastes the kingdom’s resources, particularly in financing wars with Ireland, Bolingbroke returns, gaining popular support as he marches into England. Richard’s supporters quickly abandon him, and the king ultimately surrenders the crown to his cousin, who is crowned Henry IV.

Through history, the play has been revived on many occasions, portraying themes that have stood the test if time and still resonating with today's audience. Many great actors have taken on the role of Richard II, from John Gielgud to Ian McKellen and David Tennant, and now Jonathan Bailey brings this complex character to life on stage.
