About
This new production of Juno and the Paycock starring Mark Rylance brings the Irish masterpiece to London's West End, with a strictly limited run at the Gielgud Theatre. Chronicling the misfortunes of the Boyle family during the Irish Civil War, Juno and the Paycock London is a tragicomedy with a big heart.
Plagued by their circumstances, the Boyle family struggle to make ends meet due to “Captain” Jack Boyle's lack of desire to work and alcoholism. As news of a great inheritance comes knocking, it seems the Boyle family's problems could all be a distant memory, but things are not always what they seem.
What is Juno and the Paycock about?
Dublin, 1922. As the civil war rages on, the Boyle family’s matriarch, Juno, is struggling to make ends meet and keep her family afloat. While her resilience is no laughing matter, her husband, “Captain” Jack Boyle, isn't exactly helping things. Although Jack is enthralled by dreams of becoming a ship commander, it seems the only motivation he can find is at the bottom of a bottle.
Vastly exaggerating the stories of his time as a merchant seaman, “Captain” Jack is reluctant to work due to the pains in his legs that mysteriously appear when someone suggests getting a job. With the family's daughter, Mary, on strike and the son, Johnny, disabled from his time in the War of Independence, Juno is left as the family's sole breadwinner in a poverty-stricken Ireland.
With themes of resilience and tragedy punctuated by black-humoured moments, Juno and the Paycock is a must-see production that offers a distinctive reflection on the trials and tribulations faced by families in desperate circumstances.
