London Handel Orchestra Ruby Hughes, soprano Helen Charlston alto Edward Grint bass Adrian Butterfield director Bach Mass in B minor The London Handel Orchestra's performance of Bach's St Matthew Passion here at St John's Smith Square in 2015, directed by Adrian Butterfield, was described by musicOMH as "the most perfectly performed musical experience in many years". In their continuing annual collaboration with the Tilford Bach Festival the same orchestra and director are joined by a stellar line-up of international solo singers for an intimate performance of Bach's Mass in B minor. Bach composed the sections of his Mass in B minor over a period of a quarter of a century, and it was not performed complete in his lifetime. Yet its varied movements comprise a sacred drama as involving as his great settings of the Passion. Even today, the Mass remains one of the supreme challenges for both singers and orchestras - a multi-faceted work of contrapuntal mastery, lyrical intimacy and uplifting grandeur.
