Elgar & Parry: Music with a Royal Connection Islington Choral Society Hertfordshire Chamber Orchestra Augusta Hebbert soprano Katie Bray mezzo soprano Nick Pritchard tenor Laurence Williams bass Michael Waldron conductor Parry I Was Glad Elgar Salut d'Amour Elgar Ave Verum Elgar O Salutaris Elgar Ave Maria Elgar Chanson du Matin Parry Blest Pair of Sirens Elgar Coronation Ode Celebrating two of the towering figures of English music, there is uplifting and reflective music in equal measure by both Elgar and Parry. The first half of the programme focuses on some of the shorter, more intimate choral and instrumental works by Elgar, who was appointed Master of the King's Music in 1924. This half is framed by two of the great Parry motets, with the spectacular 1902 Coronation anthem I Was Glad, and the symphonic Blest Pair of Sirens, both of which were heard at the 2011 royal wedding. The second half features Elgar's triumphant Coronation Ode. Written for the Coronation of King Edward VII in 1902, its final movement Land of Hope and Glory has become something of an unofficial national anthem, and is known and loved across the land.
