Mathilde Milwidsky violin Sally Beamish New Work C Schumann Three Romances for violin and piano Op. 22 Beethoven Sonata No. 8 in G Op. 30 Elgar Violin Sonata in E minor Op. 82 Ravel Tzigane This programme contains works by two extremely dominant British musical figures, past and present. The concert opens with a specially commissioned piece by the acclaimed composer Sally Beamish and also includes Elgar's majestic Violin Sonata, a work that was written during his last major creative spurt before his death. Clara Schumann's rarely heard Romances, dedicated to the legendary Joseph Joachim, are searingly beautiful and contain a charming reference to her husband's Violin Sonata No. 1. Ravel's Tzigane, dedicated to the great Hungarian violinist Jelly d'Aranyi, great-niece of Joachim, was first performed in London in 1924 and is one of the most popular pieces in the repertoire.
