True Blue began three years ago, when Maya Laner uploaded a few tracks to SoundCloud from her Bennington dorm room. Her poetic lyrics floating over smooth pop synths and punchy rhythms instantly gained recognition. Performing alongside Porches, at a gig on campus, Laner impressed Aaron Maine. He asked her to join the band, prompting Laner to drop out of school and move to NYC. Between tours, Laner feverishly crafts True Blue. She has constructed a highly intentional world-inhabited by playfully evil twins, ruthless cowboys, the femme fatale with the fatal flaw. True Blue is as much a sonic as a visual project, the shows are always performative and often involve negotiating props onstage and dance interventions. Laner's affect invokes desire edged with distrust, keeping the audience just on the edge of a mystery, something never named.
