About

Music of Our Time is JAM's annual 'curtain raiser'. It is a special event for us, as we go back to our roots, that of commissioning, enabling and performing new music. This concert gives us the chance to re-visit commissions from the past, place them with our most recent commission and to surround them with music from our annual Call for Music. This year we celebrate the 15th anniversary of Jonathan Dove's The Far Theatricals of Day, which sets Emily Dickinson's most beautiful poetry. This effervescent piece covers the arch of a day, from dawn to midnight, and is written for choir, brass and organ and four soloists. The Far Theatricals of Day is one of our most-performed and favourite commissions of all time! We co-commissioned Voices of Vimy last year, with Pro Coro Canada, and this concert will be its London premiere. Its first performance, given by the BBC Singers, was as part of JAM on the Marsh, JAM's annual multi-art festival on Kent's Romney Marsh. The work is incredibly moving, written for the 100th anniversary of the WW1 Battle of Vimy Ridge, where so many Canadian soldiers died alongside the allies. Voices of Vimy, written for choir and solo cello, was composed by Brit, Tom Harrold and Canadian, Stuart Beatch, to words by Welsh poet, Grahame Davies. We also have the pleasure of bringing seven other pieces of vivid, vibrant music from the great pool of talent that works today in the UK. Cecilia McDowall will be a familiar name to many, as she is a very established composer. JAM regulars will also know the music of Richard Peat, as he was commissioned by JAM as part of our 10th anniversary celebrations, back in 2010. Music of Our Time will be a fantastic celebration of new music, from the very established to the soon-to-be established!
