Mathilde Milwidsky violin John Reid piano Tartini Violin Sonata in G minor 'Devil's Trill' Bg5 Grieg Sonata No. 3 in C minor Op. 45 Bartok Romanian Folk Dances Sz56 Folk music decidedly underpins the latter two works in this programme. Grieg's third and final violin sonata builds on Norwegian folk melodies and rhythms to a great extent, whilst Bartok's Romanian Folk Dances, originally written for solo piano, are based on Romanian tunes from Transylvania, originally played on the fiddle or shepherd's flute. Tartini's Sonata in G minor, supposedly written after the Devil appeared to him in a dream, is a piece of great virtuosity and mystery, and exudes a rather improvisatory quality that links in with the folk aspects of the programme.
