Birth of the orchestra
Concerto Grosso in D Op. 6 No. 1
Dances from Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme and Alceste
Hail! Bright Cecilia Z328
The debut concert of Wond'rous Machine, an innovative period-instrument orchestra, explores the birth of the orchestra across Europe in the later seventeenth century, seen as an awe-inspiring new institution at the time. Lully's dances for Louis XIV's court musicians at Versailles exude precision and majesty, alongside a Corelli concerto grosso demonstrating the fire and unanimity of the famed Italian string style. Purcell's ode Hail! Bright Cecilia, from which ensemble takes its name, follows - a piece written in praise of the patron saint of music, with each movement isolating a particular instrument and revelling in its sonorities.
