About

Wond'rous Machine Joel Sandelson CONDUCTOR Overtures and Dances by Lully and Charpentier Lully Dances from Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme Purcell Hail! Bright Cecilia Z328 Wond'rous Machine, an innovative new period instrument orchestra, explores the birth of the orchestra in France and England in the later seventeenth century, seen as an awe-inspiring new institution at the time. Dances by Lully written for Louis XIV's court musicians at Versailles exude precision and majesty. The unanimity and power of the French style found its way to England, and Purcell's great ode Hail! Bright Cecilia, written in praise of the patron saint of music, isolates a particular instrument with each movement and revels in its sonorities. There will be a pre-concert talk at 6.30pm.
