Music in Time of War
The Revolutionary Drawing Room's 2017/18 series presents Beethoven's ground breaking Rasumovksy Quartets alongside works by his contemporaries from Italy, Spain, Austria and Czechoslovakia. Against the backdrop of the Napoleonic wars, Cherubini and Pleyel made their way in Paris, Reicha established himself as an experimental composer in Vienna and Donizetti, Arriaga and Schubert produced their first precocious works of the new Revolutionary Age.
Composers in youth, maturity and middle age: Pleyel's 1810 quartet was written when the 52 year old was in Paris, carefully keeping in with the regime. Meanwhile Beethoven was disillusioned with his former hero. Schubert's Quartet in G minor was written in the year of Napoleon's final defeat at Waterloo.
