An exhibition of work by Hampstead artist Jean M Gardiner opens at Lauderdale House in Highgate on Wednesday September 6th. Her contemplative depictions of the world around her are both moving and evocative, ranging from pen and inks and litho chalk through to watercolours and oils. Mainly figurative and largely revolving around light and shadow, her style has developed over her lifetime. To view this impressive selection of her lifetime's work is to journey the buildings, streets and landscapes of the places she has lived and visited, from Australia and New York to Jersey and France, and of course the last 50 years living close to Hampstead Heath. Indeed her numerous paintings and drawings of the Heath, Hampstead and the wider local area are a beautiful record of many familiar landmarks; of trees, ponds, paths and houses and of the shifting landscape over the last half-century. At 85 Jean M Gardiner is still painting. Her latest exhibition at Lauderdale House is a retrospective of her work to date, and gives people a chance to view and buy originals and prints from her broad range of styles and media.
