Elgar arr. Steven Verhelst 'Enigma' Variations

The main theme of Elgar's 'Enigma' Variations was not the theme initially planned for the piece; the composer claimed he had a famous melody in his head, created a countermelody to it and this became the main theme of the work. He never uncovered which melody he had in mind originally - this is the 'enigma'! Over the years there has been much speculation about the original theme. Principal Trombone of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Amsterdam, and Visiting Professor of Trombone Jorgen van Rijen explores some of the possible solutions to the 'enigma' in a programme which culminates in an arrangement of the full work by Steven Verhelst.
