Influence of Ancient Egypt

Egyptian art, religion and culture have been a source of interest and influence since ancient times.

Egypt and Europe

Egyptian gods, particularly Isis, were worshipped in Rome from the first century BC. When Egypt became part of the Empire, artefacts and monuments were removed to adorn homes and public spaces.

Over the years, artists, architects, writers, thinkers and mystics have been inspired by Ancient Egypt. Egyptian motifs such as sphinxes, pyramids and hieroglyphs can be seen in a wide variety of works.

When Napoleon arrived in Egypt many objects were carried off. The invaders included scholars as well as soldiers. When Jean-François Champollion deciphered hieroglyphs, he unlocked a rich literary legacy. All this fed the European fashion for "Egyptienerie".

Tutankhamun and Art Deco

In 1922, news and images of the discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb spread around the world.

The dazzling golden artefacts, statues and other treasures brought the splendour of Ancient Egypt to life like never before. Other objects provided a fascinating insight into everyday life and the person of the young king himself. This fuelled a passion for Egypt that found expression in the clothing, jewellery, furniture, graphic design and architecture, and influenced the Art Deco movement.
