Driving in London

London has a well-developed public transport system, which often offers the quickest way to get from A to B.

It's a good idea to avoid driving in Central London particularly at peak times. However, if you do decide to drive in London, prepare yourself for the journey with our quick guide.

London Road Rules

Unlike many countries, we drive on the left in the UK. You should obtain a copy of the Highway Code, available at AA and RAC outlets, and in many bookshops.

All drivers must wear seatbelts and passengers must wear them where fitted. Car seats or appropriate restraints are compulsory for children. Motorcyclists must wear a helmet.

See the Department of Transport website for full details of the legal requirements for drivers.

Driving Licence and Insurance in the UK

A non-UK driving licence is valid in Britain for up to 12 months from the time of your last entry into the country. Make sure you're adequately insured.
