  11. London by Night Guided walk

Photographers call it light-painting. It's what makes a great city so magical at night. It's the difference between seeing a stage-set under ordinary house lights and seeing it "live", seeing it when the show's blazing away. Now some context. I wrote this on a grey September afternoon. I was on the roof of the National Theatre, looking out across the river at Somerset House, Waterloo Bridge, Cleopatra's Needle, Charing Cross Station, Whitehall Court, the Embankment, St. Martin-in-the-Fields, Covent Garden, etc. I was looking, in short, at this walk's "stage". And it looked pretty good - maybe a bit monochrome - but pretty good. But if it's pretty good in the even light of day, it's sensational at night. Vivid, light-sprinkled, colour-saturated, purple-shadowed, transformed old London! Reason enough for coming here at night. But to come here on this walk is to go one better: having to do - as always - with a surprise-laden, marvel-crammed route and the way the history we'll encounter lights things up from within.
