Museum of the Order of St John

Gold Partner

Overview

This 16thC gatehouse was formerly the southern entrance to the Priory of the Medieval Order of St John; its history is closely linked to Henry VIII, Elizabeth I, Shakespeare, Hogarth, Dr Johnson and Dickens. The spectacular museum and historic rooms contain furniture, paintings, manuscripts, silver, jewellery, armour and coins relating to the Knights' history.

The 12thC Norman crypt and the grand priory church can be seen on the guided tour. Armour, manuscripts and religious art are among the treasures on display in the Museum. A new, interactive gallery uses multimedia exhibits to tell the story of St John's Ambulance, founded by the British Order of St John in 19thC.
