The oldest restaurant in London, Rules has been serving traditional British food since 1798. Once frequented by Charles Dickens and H.G Wells, the restaurant has retained its historical charm, and remains committed to offering fine, authentic cuisine.Tuxedoed waiters glide around the formal interior, decorated with antique sketches, where plush banquettes offer a discreet retreat from the main dining room. The hearty menu of traditional British food specialises in classic game cookery, oysters, pies and puddings, featuring game birds, roe deer and Belted Galloway beef fresh from the establishment's own High Pennines estate. The wine list is a French-led affair, or there are native draught beers served in silver tankards.

So the oldest restaurant in London unfortunately held too high of expectations for me. I made a reservation for lunch for my family. The day of the meal, I received an email saying that there was no formal dress code, but men could not wear shorts. My brother left to go back to the hotel, got stuck in London traffic, and decided not to come. For an American, it's hard to understand this no...more

We were extremely disappointed with our short stay at the Rules restaurant. Decor looks very nice and authentic, but the service was terrible and anti-business!!! We are 2 people and in the middle of the afternoon just wanted to chillax with a bottle of wine and some cheese and gravlax. We ordered 2 starters and 2 cheese plates and a bottle of Pinot blanc that would have costed us over 150£...more

I think their food are from 1798 as well...

Veal: well.. You have to taste with your eyes first.. It looks like 7£ food, and taste like 10£. But cost 30£

Oyster: it's just ok, but too expensive.

The yearprobably is the only thing left here.more

Got a 8:30pm reservation for 1 on Sunday night. That's a bit later than I'm used to but boy am I glad I got it and kept the reservation!

So so: fish soup.

Good and Interesting: beer in a silver mug. I had Guiness and it stayed cold to the last drop!

All the desserts looked great...I had the dark chocolate...it was moist and the bottom was crunchy (maybe toffee?)

Great: I tried 2 of all three...more

This place makes me LOL. On one hand the food was decent. On the other, the service was probably the most pretentious, snobby, nose up in the air @#(%@, that I have ever experienced. Seriously, I could have practically tasted the waiters nose hairs if he came any closer to us. It's not like we weren't well dressed, or spoke sh*tty english...it was just Mr.Belvedere doing his PMS thing....more
