Skillful, inventive cooking has earned Soho's Arbutus a Michelin star. The chatty crowd of diners who fill the smart dining room at this bistro deluxe shows no signs of disagreeing.

Polished seasonal dishes range from the traditional - Marseilles-style bouillabaisse or bavette of Scottish beef - to plats du jour such as shin of Limousin veal with cavalo nero and soft polenta. The cosmopolitan wine list offers nearly all bins in 250ml carafes.

At £25 the pre-theatre menu seems like quite a good deal, but none of the options on the fixed menu were particularly stellar, and the food itself was not as impressive as we'd hoped. Moreover, the service was really slow, causing us to have to rush through dessert to make it to our show in time-...more
