They really do great Indian sweets and are a well-known brand name all over UK. But Jalebis ( syrupy, fried doughy little sweets) for £9 a kilo is a bit farcical. This is purely a take-away. You can also get a mixed box of a variety of different sweet-meats which are priced by weight. The Jalebis are really nice...and fattening. Probably too rich for some palettes, but we;; worth a trymore

There's a recipe in my bumper Madhur Jaffrey cookbook for besan barfee. But you know what? Why bother, when you can buy it ready-made from Ambala, which stocks a bewildering range of barfee (Indian gram flour fudge-cakes) and snacky Bombay Mix, Gujerati Mix and other savouries.

An Indian friend said we had to try Ambala's samosas. He wasn't wrong. The fist-sized pastry packages are stuffed...more
