The sprawling Old Truman Brewery complex has become the beating heart of east London’s Shoreditch neighbourhood. Al Volo restaurant has a prime spot, including a summer terrace, in Ely’s Yard – the perfect place for a working lunch or a revitalising pit stop after visiting the nearby Spitalfields or Sunday Up Market. Al Volo has struck the perfect balance of sleek design and Shoreditch cool and great, unpretentious food; all of that plus friendly service makes this a dining destination. It shows too – peak times get very busy and booking is recommended. There are piadine, pizza and grilled mains on offer here, but fresh pasta is really the star of the show; we love the parma ham and ricotto ravioli with Italian bacon and a blend of pistachio nuts, parmesan and olive oil. Customers also rate the fresh burrata antipasti, and mouth-watering home-made desserts, including an addictive tiramisu.
