A selection of works by Benjamin Ellin and Louai Alhenawi

This concert will discover and celebrate the history of the West-Eastern Divan by Goethe (written 1814-1819) inspired by the culture of the 'Other'. The concert will aim to frame the composition and importance of the work by Goethe through presenting works by the Persian poet Hafiz, some of Goethe's actual Divan texts alongside snapshots of newly commissioned works. The music will draw inspiration from composers such as Brahms, Schubert and Schumann who in turn were directly inspired by the writings of Goethe. Tafahum will fuse these musical ingredients into newly composed works, absorbing the ideas of the spiritual bridge that has connected Hafiz with Goethe and ultimately the East and the West. The written texts from Hafiz, Goethe and the present day, alongside the live music will enable the exploration of the important themes of collaboration and unity from the 19th Century to the present time.
