The Horniman's Indian Summer season concludes with the Horniman Mela - a fun day of performances and activities including puppetry workshops, dance and storytelling, inspired by popular South Asian festivals and celebratory traditions. The day will culminate with a dance procession and gathering - led by Emergency Exit Arts and Bollywood Brass Band - to recreate a Holi festival colour throw. Activities and performances at the Horniman Mela include: Workshops: Shadow puppetry workshops - make a puppet based on Indian folk tales and bring it to life! Led by our partner Emergency Exit Arts. The Healing Garden - explore Auryevedic herbs through storytelling, music and movement in this interactive workshop. Led by our partner Emergency Exit Arts. Colouring Creatures - help create a work of art throughout the day based on batik designs. Led by our partner Emergency Exit Arts. Dandiya Rass - a workshop to learn the traditional folk dance Dandiya Rass which is performed during the autumn Hindu festival of Navratri in Gujarat, India. Led by our partner Apsara Arts. Performances: Bollywod Brass Band - have fun dancing to Bollywood rhythms and classic hits in a joyful and colourful performance by this pioneering band who have performed all over the world. Paradiso: Mans Enduring Search for Perfection - inspired by Dante's Divine Comedy and the astrological influences of the navagrahas (9 plants) of Hindu mythology, this performance is also an energetic celebration of dance. Produced by South Asian dance company Akademi. Dance procession and Holi festival colour throw - Join us for a dance procession from 5.30pm ending in a Holi festival inspired colour throw. Led by Emergency Exit Arts and Bollywood Brass Band. [Please don't wear or bring anything valuable or that stains easily. Plastic ponchos will be available.] Other family activities: Handling museum objects related to India. Tales from India in interactive storytelling sessions. Face painting with designs inspired by the festivals of Onam and Ganapati. A tiger themed bouncy castle. Food and market stalls selling a range of wares inspired by South Asia will also be on site, curated by Pexmas.
