Joseph Goddard is an artist predominately concerned with post-war architecture and its inherent ideology. His latest sculptural series Structure of Collapse draws upon the ideas of French philosopher Paul Virilio, imagining the urban space as a transmitter and receiver of information, rained down from orbiting satellites and inhabited by global citizens who absorb its ideology.
The work appears like a set of smouldering, silent witnesses to long periods of time, over which this process becomes almost geological. Surfaces present ossified newspaper headlines collected in recent years, imbuing traces of media-generated zeitgeist into the dense, charred, Brutalist structures, which by contrast suggest a lengthy gestation. A dystopian vision, the installation evokes a sense of endless crisis.
