Unkle were formed in the 1990s by school friends James Lavelle and Tim Goldsworthy. The acid-jazz, house and hip hop scene of the 1990s provided the ideal breading ground for idiosyncratic music and, as a result, Unkle were born. At just 19 James Lavelle had established himself as a DJ and in 1993 he formed the Mo' Wax Records. DJ Krush, DJ Shadow, Beastie Boys-cohort Money Mark, Air and Blackalicious thrived under his enthusiastic and anti-authoritarian guidance. Mo' Wax, like Stiff and Island in previous eras, became the record label that defined the zeitgeist. In 1996 he teamed up with Tim Goldsworthy and Kudo from the Japanese hip hop outfit Major Force to form Unkle, a name he had originally intended to use for his own solo ventures. After a failed attempt to release a solo album in Los Angeles Goldsworthy and Kudo left the group. Lavelle turned to DJ Shadow and other Mo' Wax Records artists and in 1998 the debut album Psyence Fiction was at last released and reached number four in the British album charts. The current manifestation of the group, James Lavelle and Pablo Clements, are touring promoting their album Where Did The Night Fall.
