About

A show about the aftermath of displacement, exploring migration, belonging, assimilation, the construction of cultural and personal identity and relation to one's heritage. Judita's grandparents were exiled from Lithuania to Siberia by the Soviets; Miriam's fled from Vienna to America from the Nazis. They have grown up with the narrative of displacement in their bones and the consequences still rippling through their families. They have also displaced themselves and are now struggling with notions of 'home', 'native' and 'migrant'. As the largest mass displacement of people since their grandparents' generation is happening all around us, and as our politics become more and more divisive, the need to question one's heritage and belonging, and to awaken empathy, is growing. Through song, live and recorded music, physical theatre, film, and mischief, Double Trouble take the audience on their journey through displacement and its consequences: through their grandparents' diaries and photographs, through packing and unpacking, through personal confession and fictional stories, through starvation and compassion, through collapse and ultimately, survival. Developed on Starting Blocks 2017 at CPT. Adventures in Black and White is a part of The Shape Of Things To Come: two weeks of hot-off-the-press projects from CPT's favourite artists.
