The annual exhibition of the Royal Miniature Society is an opportunity to see over 600 paintings and sculptures. These jewels of art require and deserve several hours of the viewer's time because there is such a wealth of detail in every piece. It is impossible to take everything in at a first look. Diverse subjects sit side by side, in different styles and media, and they all have one thing in common; no frame is more than 4.5 x 6 inches, and many of the paintings within are considerably smaller. It is worth going around with one of the magnifying glasses provided in order to see the brushwork and try to answer the frequently asked question 'how do they paint so small? The sculpture poses a similar question and perhaps not knowing adds to the appeal of this very popular exhibition. The exhibition includes all the popular subjects: portraits hang alongside still life, botanical, wildlife, landscape and more. There is also a display from the Diploma Collection, of works by past members of the Society. The quality and variety are matched only by the affordability of the pieces and patrons come year after year to add to their collection.
