Bampton Classical Opera
The School of Jealousy (La scuola de' gelosi)
The School of Jealousy
Count Bandiera is a skilful philanderer, but takes a big risk when he invites Ernestina, wife of a pathologically jealous businessman, out on a shopping trip. A decidedly non-PC visit to a madhouse, fortune-telling gypsies and the lessons taught by paintings are just some of the bizarre situations encountered in this scintillating and cynical comedy of marital dis-harmony.
Following revelatory productions of Salieri's "Trofonio's Cave" and "Falstaff" Bampton Classical Opera continues its exciting rehabilitation of one of the most misunderstood of composers. The School of Jealousy, with its sharp libretto and glittering ensembles, quickly won a place in the repertory of opera houses across Europe. In Vienna in 1783, where Salieri re-wrote the score including new arias for the star English soprano Nancy Storace, its runaway success encouraged Mozart and his librettist Da Ponte to create La scuola degli amanti, better known as Cosi fan tutte.
There will be a pre-concert talk at 6.00pm
