It took a live album to break the Illinois-formed outfit, when, in 1979, they released Live At The Budokan. They had been big in Japan for a while but it was the single, I Want You To Want Me, from the album brought them international acclaim. Their melodic pop-rock appealed to a wide audience and the title track of their subsequent album, Dream Police, cemented their position in the charts and on FM radio. With a frontman like Robin Zander to bring in the teens and a master guitarist in Rick Nielsen for the more serious audience, their future seemed assured. However, a change in direction toward a harder sound and the departure of founder member and bassist Tom Petersson in 1981 the band's fortunes declined sharply. Various attempts to revive their career were made, some of which the band did not appreciate, but to little success. Despite this, the band continued to tour and this kept their name known and their hardcore fans happy. Eventually Petersson returned and after their songs featuring in a number of films, including Top Gun and the computer game Guitar Hero, recognition of their talents resurfaced. Several albums and numerous live appearances down the line, the band are still working and now receiving recognition for their contribution to American music.
