Erykah Badu at Eventim Apollo

About

Ms Badu first came to prominence as a singer with the release of her first album, Baduizm. The innovative sound of the album with its jazz phrasings and perceptive lyrics, gave rise to the term neo-soul, something the artist later shunned as meaningless. Erykah Badu's music does not follow the standard patterns of modern R&B or the genre's usual obsessions. She is more concerned with personal and, indeed, political subjects, not being afraid to be controversial in doing so. During her career she has released a number of albums, most of which were certified gold and some even platinum. She has also had single success, although mainly in the US. Ms Badu has collaborated on record with a number of other artists including Macy Gray and Sergio Mendes. On subsequent albums her lyrics reflected concern more with social commentary about urban life and cultural identity than with her earlier individual-based content before returning to more familiar themes of love and romance. The music has also moved on going through slick digital production and back to a warmer, analogue sound. In addition to her musical projects, she has appeared in a number of films in an expanding acting career. Offstage she has been involved in charity work with inner-city projectcts.
