Director Kally Lloyd-Jones, who previously choreographed Cinderella and The Secret Marriage for the company, masterminds an impassioned touring production of Leos Janacek's lyrical and moving love story. The powerful opera of infidelity and desire is based on the composer's real-life obsession with a 25-year-old married woman, Kamila Stosslova. This infatuation informed his doomed heroine Katya, who begins an affair with younger man Boris while her husband Tichon is away on business. Racked with guilt, she confesses her affair to Tichon and her mother-in-law Kabanicha, and is consequently driven to despair, sparking the tragic climax against the claustrophobic and oppressive backdrop of '20s Russia. As a dramatic counterpoint, Kabanicha's foster daughter Varvara pursues her own romantic destiny with a young man called Kudrjash. Love unites and love divides. Sopranos Joanne Boag and Nadine Livingston share the demanding title role with tenors Michael Bracegirdle and Simon Crosby Buttle as the men in her life. Caryl Hughes, one of the stars of yesteryear's Cinderella, portrays the confidante Varvara.
