The discipline of writing for string quartet - its intimacy, the scope for dialogue between individual voices - has led many composers to produce some of their most engaging, exciting, challenging and often playful works. This concert takes us from the birth of the genre - from Haydn, a prolific writer for the form - through to a new work by one of today's most important and impressive compositional voices, John Adams. In between comes Ravel's String Quartet, a highly expressive, characterful piece, rich in captivating textures. The acclaimed St Lawrence String Quartet has 20 years and more than 2,000 performances under its belt - in this most communicative and collaborative of musical genres, such longevity can only reap ever richer rewards.
