Vincent van Gogh’s brushstrokes convey a sense of movement in paintings such as A Wheatfield with Cypresses. In turn, a team of over 100 artists and filmmakers have brought his works to life in a new film. 'Loving Vincent' is the world’s first fully painted feature film. Each frame is an oil painting on canvas, done with the same techniques that Van Gogh himself used.
Drawing on over 800 letters written by the painter, the film investigates Van Gogh’s life and death through over 120 of his paintings and the characters depicted in them. The film, by Oscar-winning film companies Breakthru Films and Trademark Films, stars Saoirse Ronan, Aidan Turner, Douglas Booth, Helen McCrory, Chris O’Dowd, and Jerome Flynn.
Ahead of its release, director Dorota Kobiela and producer Hugh Welchman discuss with curator Christopher Riopelle how the film developed creatively out of Vincent’s letters and paintings and the technical challenges of its production.
