Way out yonder in the Albuquerque cornfields, shadowed by vermilion mountains, country music is being redefined by a husband and wife duo. After two decades of marriage and eight studio albums, Brett and Rennie Sparks continue to gain notoriety for their eerie ballads that contemplate love's wildness and surrealism. Their fans include Andrew Bird, Cerys Matthews and Christy Moore who covered the Sparks' feral lament So Much Wine, a brave song that features the unbridled lines, "when you fell asleep with blood on your teeth, I got in my car and drove away." Raven-haired Rennie is the sole lyricist and her bespectacled betrothed arranges music and provides lead vocals on the bulk of their repertoire. Unlike most country artists, they straddle the divide between contemporary sentiments and folklore, capturing something timelessly haunting. Last year they celebrated their 20th Wedding Anniversary with their album Honey Moon, once again documenting their primal waltz through the wilderness in song.
