Royal Opera: Cosi Fan Tutte at Royal Opera House

About

Thomas Hengelbrock conducts Mozart's popular comedy, Cosi Fan Tutte, which opens at the Royal Opera House in Jonathan Miller's modern dress production of the 18th-century classic. Originally scorned for its immorality, Cosi Fan Tutte is now hailed for its exploration of decadence, seduction, friendship and forgiveness. A tale of deception and disguise, the opera concerns two young officers and their fiances. To test the love of their partners, the soldiers pretend to depart for war and return in disguise, to discover not only that their young ladies are easily wooed, but that they each fall for each other's partner. Jonathan Miller's sharp production brings Cosi Fan Tutte to the modern world. The boys get the inspiration for their disguises from the stereotypes of rock'n'roll and the girls use smart-phones to take pictures and send texts. This expedient rightly points out the works timeless relevance to the fickleness of human behaviour. Returning for its eighth revival, the production has become a Royal Opera House favourite.
