Catch the early Wagnerian opera Tannhäuser at the Royal Opera House.
After tiring of Venus' lustful ways and leaving her domain, Tannhäuser returns to Wartburg castle where his former lover Elizabeth still waits for him. But during the famous Wartburg Song Contest Tannhäuser argues for the importance of physical desire, praising Venus, and his indiscretions must be paid for.
Peter Seiffert, Emma Bell, Christian Gerhaher and Sophie Koch star in an acclaimed production by Tim Albery, which focuses on the themes of sensual and spiritual love at the opera's heart. Conducted by Hartmut Haenchen, Wagner's rousing score includes Wolfram’s O du, mein holder Abendstern, Elisabeth’s Allmächt’ge Jungfrau and Tannhäuser’s Dir töne Lob.
