It's 1996, and a group of teenagers living in the little town of Hoylake on the Wirral decide to form a band. Five years later that band releases their eponymous debut, The Coral. Taking the indie sound of the day and releasing it from its uninspiring drudgery the six-piece throws together a variety of influences both new and old, and somehow it seems to work. Their skewed style encompasses retro elements of sixties-pop, guitar-rock, a tinge of psychedelia and a playful attitude. Resulting in unique songs that remain digestible, The Coral were to go on to become a huge success. Swiftly noticed by everyone from the general public to the critics, the group have racked up a Mercury Music Prize nomination and numerous hit singles. Never dropping in quality their continued creativity has led to five top-ten albums, and despite the departure of guitarist Bill Ryder-Jones to pursue pastures new The Coral continue as strong as ever.
