About

Discover the content of the museum’s unseen collection through Mark Fairnington’s paintings with Collected and Possessed at the Horniman Museum and Gardens.

With much of the Horniman’s collection stored away from the public, British painter Mark Fairnington embarked on a curious fifteen-year-long project to shed light on the hidden treasures. Taking inspiration from the museum’s un-exhibited natural history collection of stuffed animals, the artist produced a series of paintings and artworks to expose his discoveries.

See Fairnington’s paintings of large-scale insects, details of taxidermy specimens and depictions of entire storerooms on display alongside some of the previously unseen original specimens in this unusual and intriguing exhibition.
