Experience the romance and spectacle of Giselle performed by The Royal Ballet in the Royal Opera House’s grand surroundings.
Giselle, a peasant girl, falls in love with Count Albrecht, who she believes to be a villager. When she finds out his true identity and his betrothal to another, Giselle dies of a broken heart. Distraught at his loss, the Count roams the forest where he finds Giselle as one of the Wilis, spirits of unmarried young brides who dance men to their death.
First performed in 1841, Peter Wright bases his own production on Marius Petipa’s popular 1884 revival of the great ballet. The first half of the ballet is filled with rustic colours, while as the mood changes in the second act, the stage is flooded in mystical moonlight. A hauntingly moving tale, this is the perfect introduction to the poignant world of romantic ballet.
