About

Experience a marvellous revival of Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom at the National Theatre.

Known as “mother of the Blues,” in 1920’s Chicago, Ma Rainey is determined that Black Bottom, the song that bears her name, will be recorded her way. The battle for control of her music is undermined by the tension between her band members – hot headed trumpeter Levee and veteran players Cutler and Toledo – and interference from her white producers.

Sharon D Clarke plays the real-life Blues legend, who commands in a still topical play infused with her music.
