About

Discover the award-winning play Red Velvet at the Garrick Theatre this winter, part of the Kenneth Branagh Theatre Company’s the Plays at the Garrick Season.

Written by Lolita Chakrabarti and directed by Indhu Rubasingham, this fictional story based on real-life events stars Olivier Award winner Adrian Lester.

It’s 1833 at the Theatre Royal in Covent Garden and Edmund Kean, the celebrated British stage actor, breaks down mid-performance while playing Othello. A young black actor, American Ira Aldridge, is asked to take over his part, while on the streets of London people are rioting over the abolition of slavery. Against this precarious social and political backdrop, how will the audience, actors and critics respond to a black leading man on stage?
