About

Experience an original take on the work of DH Lawrence as Husbands & Sons arrives on stage at the National Theatre, starring Anne-Marie Duff as Lizzie Holroyd.

Adapted by Ben Power, this imaginative production interweaves the material of three of Lawrence’s greatest mining dramas – The Daughter-in-Law, A Collier’s Friday Night and The Widowing of Mrs Holroyd – playing them out simultaneously and skilfully blending common themes and narratives.

Evocative of a world gone by in which manual labour and working-class values were dominant, it tells the story of everyday lives in a village on the border of Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire. In the shadow of the vast, looming Brinsley pit, the women of the village play out their roles of mothers and wives as they struggle to hold their souls and their families together.
