Watch Robert Icke’s fresh take on Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya, as the Almeida Theatre reaches the end of its mini-season of great 19th-century plays.
Uncle Vanya tells the story of an older professor and his much younger and more glamorous wife named Yelena. When they take a trip to his rural estate, the couple encounter the brother of the professor’s first wife, Vanya, along with Astrov, a local doctor. The two inadvertently fall under the spell of Yelena’s charms, causing dilemmas of unrequited love and the questioning of true beauty. When the Professor announces his decision to sell the estate, home to Vanya, Astrov and the professor’s daughter, relationships are on the verge of breaking down completely.
Full of unhappy characters questioning their unsatisfactory existence, this play is a timeless, precise and witty look at the minutiae and worth of human life.
