About

Catch the final instalment of Almeida Theatre’s Ibsen trilogy with Little Eyolf.

The 19th-century play by Henrik Ibsen incorporates Norwegian folklore and imagery into a surreal and moving storyline. Adapted by Richard Eyre and starring Jolyon Coy and Lydia Leonard, Little Eyolf asks: just what is it that makes a life well-lived?

The play follows the Allmer family. When the father, Alfred, returns home from the mountains, he commits himself to raising his disabled son, Eyolf. Assuming that his son’s immobile leg will prevent him from taking part in traditional activities, he tries to steer him towards intellectual pursuits. After a visit from the mysterious Rat-Wife, a plan is hatched that will change Alfred’s life forever. As things spiral out of control, Ibsen’s work becomes a dramatic observation of how a marriage can catastrophically fall apart.
