About

Witness one of Henrik Ibsen’s great works as The Master Builder comes to The Old Vic.

Written late in the Norwegian playwright’s career, The Master Builder is a compelling masterpiece that tackles some of life’s big questions. This new adaptation by David Hare is an energetic production starring Ralph Fiennes in the title role, whose film credits include The Grand Budapest Hotel, Harry Potter and Skyfall, and who recently starred in Man and Superman at the National Theatre.

Halvard Solness has spent his life carefully crafting a reputation as the builder of the tallest and most impressive spires in the land. But he is distracted from his work when a country girl named Hilde, whose magnetic personality fascinates him, enters his life. As the older man is faced with the energy of youth, his world spins towards a perilous climax in this clever exploration of power, age, control and life and death.
