Experience the bewildering results of combining mathematics and art with The Amazing World of M.C. Escher at the Dulwich Picture Gallery.
Born in 1898, the Dutchman was a master draughtsman with a wonderfully inventive imagination. He embarked on a career as an architect in 1918, but was distracted from this work when a teacher noticed his talent as a printmaker and encouraged his ability to spot the oddities of perspective and the possibilities of unusual vantage points.
Working with woodcuts, watercolours, lithographs and drawings, his highly distinctive, impossible looking works made him one of the best-known artists of the last century. Exploring pattern, space and surrealist viewpoints, the appeal of his work is enduring, fascinating and captivates imaginations as much today as it did at the height of his popularity in the 1960s.
This exhibition features more than 100 examples of his curiously composed works, alongside compelling and exclusive materials retrieved from the archives.
