Head to the Menier Chocolate Factory to catch the stage debut of Anthony Horowitz’s play Dinner With Saddam. Having written the Alex Rider series, Sherlock Holmes and James Bond stories, Horowitz is in completely new territory with a tale about the late Iraqi dictator, Saddam Hussein.
The comedy, starring Nathan Amzi, Steven Berkoff and Sanjeev Bhaskar, is loosely based on stories that emerged about Saddam Hussein’s attempts to avoid capture by his enemies. Paranoid that he might be bombed, assassinated or captured as he slept, Hussein would never spend two nights in the same location. Instead he would arrive, unannounced, on the doorsteps of various private houses expecting to be fed and given a place to sleep.
Exploring the comic potential of this bizarre set up, Horowitz skilfully blends the political and personal fallout of one such encounter. As a family and guest enjoy a meal, something sinister is being cooked up behind the kitchen door.
