Take a trip to the Barbican Art Gallery for a masterclass in design genius with The World of Charles and Ray Eames.
The exceptionally influential duo were among the most important designers of the last century, with outstanding careers that spanned more than four decades. This exhibition celebrates and explores the work that emerged from the famous Eames Office, a self-styled laboratory where the couple and their collaborators created dazzling work in the fields of graphics, architecture, furniture, film, sculpture and photography.
Boasting more than 380 works, the exhibition is structured thematically and details the philosophies behind their legacy of post-war modernism. With artefacts from their personal collections and contextual material from their famous office, this is a complex portrait that elegantly shows how their pioneering multi-media architecture shaped the end of the last century and predicted the coming of the information age.
Highlights include the first moulded plastic chair created by the duo, a range of prototype furniture and even the moulded plywood nose cone of a military aircraft.
